Getnick Law attorneys have spoken at the annual Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime, a prestigious event that brings tother an “outstanding network of experts from across the world in all the disciplines relevant to the prevention and control of economic crime and misconduct.” In September 2025, Neil Getnick moderated, and Margaret Finerty participated in, a plenary workshop panel titled “HMRC’s New Tax Whistleblower Initiative: Applying the Successful U.S. Whistleblower Award Model to the U.K. and E.U.” Additional panelists included a Barrister who served as a former Associate General Counsel at the UK Serious Fraud Office, and a Partner at a multinational law firm headquartered in London who serves as the firm’s Head of Commercial Crime. The panel detailed the context which gave rise to the HMRC tax reward programme, including a renewed focus in the UK on eliminating economic crime and a culture shift whereby the UK is becoming increasingly accepting of whistleblowers; the successful U.S. whistleblower award model upon which the HMRC programme is based, including a detailed discussion of the federal False Claims Act and IRS Whistleblower Program; and the essential elements for effective whistleblower reward programmes.
Based on the success of the 2025 plenary workshop session, Getnick Law attorneys will again moderate and participate in a plenary session addressing the HMRC tax reward programme in 2026.
Getnick Law attorneys have also coordinated and participated on panels on the HMRC tax reward programme in the United States. For example, at The Anti-Fraud Coalition’s 2025 Annual Conference, Margaret Finerty spoke alongside a member of HMRC to discuss the tax reward programme; significant developments in the IRS Whistleblower Program; and the continued growth in the use of state False Claims Act cases for tax violations. Margaret is also moderating a panel on the HMRC programme in March 2026 at The Anti-Fraud Coalition’s Annual Financial Fraud Conference.
